Questions families ask about hospice
Who qualifies for Medicare hospice care?
A hospice physician and the attending physician, if applicable, must certify a prognosis of six months or less if the illness follows its usual course. The patient elects the hospice benefit.
Does hospice stop after six months?
Not automatically. Medicare hospice care can continue when eligibility is recertified.
What can the hospice benefit include?
Care related to the terminal illness may include nursing, symptom-relief medicines, equipment, supplies, social work, spiritual support, and grief counseling. Ask the team what your care plan includes.
What if symptoms become difficult to manage at home?
Contact the hospice team promptly. Depending on the clinical need, hospice can arrange a different level of care, including short-term inpatient care.
Is someone at home around the clock?
Routine home hospice uses visits and on-call support. It is not a live-in caregiver service. Discuss caregiving needs and crisis-care arrangements with the hospice team.
Can my family call before deciding?
Yes. Call (858) 541-2000. A conversation does not commit you to hospice.
